Let x be the side of the original garden. Then we have that:
(x+7)*(x+7) = 144
That is the same as writing that:
(x+7)^2 = 12^2
You can solve this by expanding the left side and using the quadratic formula. But a much easier way is to notice that you can just take the square root of both sides and get (discarding the negative root):
x+7 = 12
So x = 5, thus the length of each side of the original garden is 5m.
