Is this sentence for my story good or wonderful?
In a hidden chamber, there was a chest full of gold coins and precious pearls.
The story takes place underwater.
A mermaid will find the chest under seaweed.
I'm afraid it's neither good nor wonderful. Kind of skewed choices you offered.
The clause or sentence construction "there was" is weak and wordy. The reader knows pearls are precious, so adding that adjective is mildly insulting.
What might be better and stronger is more detail. I don't know your story, of course, but something like,
His tanks were getting low. Just one more look, then he'd return to the boat. In the hidden chamber, a chest awaited, nearly invisible under a coating of barnacles. The hasp lying on the ocean floor glinted in his flashlight beam. The small current of the chest's opening shifted pearls in the clear water, revealing heaped gold coins.
Not that great, but don't you feel more like you're right with the character discovering this treasure? See if you can do something which accomplishes the same thing, but with your story's details and your own author's voice.
